It was through social media that I discovered La Boîte à Plumes. It is an Afro-Caribbean bookstore located in the Taupinière district of Le Diamant, created in December 2021 by a young Martinican woman. That was all I needed to visit this little gem. As a lover of words and books, I have always been an avid reader since my early childhood, with a clear preference for Afro-Caribbean novels. In short, for novels to which I can relate and which tell a part of my story, such as Pluie et Vent sur Télumée Miracle or Fanm Déwo by Tony DELSHAM. Let’s discover La Boîte à Plumes together !
Lindsay: from pharmacy to bookstore.
Who is Lindsay? Lindsay CATALAN is a child of the Péyi, a lively mother of two children who, after a career in the pharmaceutical industry, decided to open her own bookstore. You might say it’s unrelated, but it seems that this career was meant for her. Her goals are to address the lack of diversity in literature, and to promote Afro-Caribbean literature as a way to reconnect with our history. And as she is talented in many ways, Lindsay is also the author of a beautiful children’s book, Georges and the Little Creole Fairy. It’s the story of a mischievous little boy who knows how to say no in his own way. He learns, thanks to the little Creole fairy, that one can always learn from their mistakes. In fact, it was this book that inspired Lindsay to open her own bookstore .
La Boîte à Plumes: a cozy bookstore…
What immediately pleased me upon entering the bookstore was Lindsay’s smile. I immediately felt at home and stayed there for almost 3 hours. I liked the decoration of the place, the paintings, plants, and cushions that enhance the cozy aspect of the bookstore. There are very diverse references, including essential classics like Aimé CÉSAIRE, Patrick CHAMOISEAU, Simone and André SCHWARTZ-BART, but also numerous authors to discover. You can find books by:
- Valérie RODNEY – Pawol pou Makrel ;
- Candice CARTY-WILLAIMS – Queenie ;
- Chantal CLEM – Moi Lumina Sophie. You can also find books for children, puzzles, and albums like the latest one from E.sy KENNENGA, entitled Pom’ Kanel .
… but not only that
La Boîte à Plumes also offers workshops for children focused on concentration, drawing, and language disorders. Teenagers can also find something to their liking through themed sessions tailored to them, such as the art of self-expression, rap culture, and hip hop. Finally, for adults, they can enjoy the bookstore by exchanging ideas and discussing topics that interest and challenge them. Stay connected! You can also find African decoration accessories there.
You will have understood that La Boîte à Plumes is truly a unique bookstore to visit, where you will find real treasures. I am literally charmed. A true haven of sweetness! I am sure you will find the pen that suits you.
