(And why is it a good thing?) This could not have escaped you, unless you live in a cave (or in Gros-Morne, we don’t judge you, we promise!), the new trend is to create something new with old material.
You may have noticed this with TikTok or with the new musical hits that are currently being released. It’s also true with the new movies hitting our screens, which are more or less original, with sequels, remakes, and reboots of films from the 80s.
At the same time, why wouldn’t artists or big movie studios take advantage of this? Taking an old recipe that has worked many times in the past and creating new works from it is a winning bet on paper.
After all, if we set aside the purely financial aspect of things, and even though this practice is certainly not new, it is undeniable that it allows younger generations to discover a musical, cinematic or video game universe that has influenced the childhood or adolescence of previous generations.
Isn’t that beautiful? Transmission, sharing. It’s human nature to want to share what we know. So yes, true originality, the kind that creates new, unique and innovative works, is becoming increasingly rare. But to create new things, you need to have a source of inspiration and unless you’re the successor of Mozart or Albert Einstein, it becomes difficult to create something that hasn’t already been done or discovered before.
So, instead of criticizing, saying that it was better before, frowning and thinking that a certain work is not innovative, can’t we embrace the fact that yes, we can create something new with old material, and there’s nothing wrong with that? And at least, it cultivates our dear Gen Z.
And in the end, as long as everyone pays their royalties, where is the real problem!?
