Schoelcher Library Martinique: A Man Behind the Library's Construction

This fabulous building was created at the initiative of the famous abolitionist Victor Schœlcher. During his tenure as Undersecretary of State for the Navy and Colonies, he strongly advocated for the drafting of the 1848 decree abolishing slavery.

In 1883, he decided to donate his private library, which consisted of about 10,000 books and musical scores, to the General Council of Martinique. In exchange for his donation, he requested the construction of a public library to make culture and education accessible to the entire population.

Unfortunately, a terrible fire devastated the city in 1890, resulting in the destruction of many works in the library; only 1200 books were saved.

Schoelcher Library: A Masterpiece with Diverse Influences

As strange as it may seem, the library was designed and built in Paris in 1887 by the talented architect Pierre-Henri Picq.

The architect drew inspiration from architectural influences stemming from the colonial era. He harmoniously combined Byzantine, Egyptian, and Moorish arts with Art Nouveau, subtly blending the trendy materials of the time, including metal, concrete, wrought iron, and wood.

The library was exhibited at the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris and remained in the Jardin des Tuileries for six years. Later, it was dismantled and transported by boat to Martinique, where it was reconstructed at its current location.

The Mission of Schoelcher Library: Culture for All

The Schoelcher Library contributes to the development of reading and cultural initiatives throughout the department. Additionally, it plays a role in combating illiteracy, in line with the desires of Victor Schœlcher.
