Beautiful good morning from Mon Vè!
Mon Vè Today
Airlocal welcomes you to Mon Vè, a small commune nestled in the heart of Martinique, where nature reigns supreme.
Mon Vè, known for its agricultural products, is generally considered a remote commune with few activities.
However, behind all these preconceptions, there are hidden treasures.
HISTORY OF LE MORNE VERT MARTINIQUE
Le Morne-Vert Martinique is a former hamlet of Le Carbet.
In 1846, Father Goux requested the creation of the parish of Le Morne-Vert.
Established in 1865, it welcomed its first priest in 1572, and a cemetery was built there in 1874.
In 1884, the parish had a population of 1,800 inhabitants, and from 1885, it housed two primary schools.
Gradually, it developed and separated from Le Carbet.
In 1895, it obtained its own civil status registers.
42 years later, a request for autonomy was sent to the Colonial Administration.
10 years after that, Le Morne-Vert was established as a municipality, and new borders were assigned to it.
In 1949, Luce Lemaistre became the first female mayor of the municipality and also of Martinique.
Finally, the canton of Le Morne-Vert was integrated into that of Le Carbet in 1985.
Its name was simply attributed due to its geographical location: the municipality is situated on a relatively wooded hill where nature is lush.
URBAN PLANNING OF THIS MARTINIQUE COMMUNE
A well-preserved town
The municipality, with its 1,858 inhabitants, can be reached via Departmental Road 19 from Le Carbet and Departmental Road 20 from Bellefontaine.
However, pedestrian paths also exist to access it through the four other neighboring municipalities.
GEOGRAPHY OF MORNE VERT
A municipality of lush greenery!
Morne-Vert is located in the northern Caribbean region of the island, and its inhabitants are called "Verdimornais."
The municipality is divided into 14 districts.
The climate here is rather humid and cool. This is largely due to the six mountains within its territory, which are part of the Pitons du Carbet mountain range.
Situated in the center of the island, Morne-Vert does not have direct access to the sea. However, it is surrounded by Morne-Rouge, Case-Pilote, Schoelcher municipality in Martinique, and Fond-Saint-Denis, which are only accessible on foot.
To the northwest of the municipality lies Le Carbet, and a bit further south is Bellefontaine.
Often referred to as the "Little Swiss of the Caribbean" and with an elevation of 432 meters, this village with its lush green landscape has very few, if any, mosquitoes!
POLITICS
A town loyal to its political party
The current mayor of Morne-Vert is a woman: Mrs. Angèle Serbin.
She succeeded Mr. Saliber, who was elected in 2020 but had to leave his position in favor of the CTM.
Since 1977, all the mayors of the municipality have come from the same political party.
YOUTH
Morne-Vert has an elementary school that includes both kindergarten and primary education, as well as a nursery.
Es ou té sav sa ?
Several establishments and locations in Morne-Vert are adorned with colorful murals. These murals, created by Floriane Moustin, aim to depict and celebrate both the Martinican woman, a central figure in our society, and the Caribbean woman.
CULTURE
What to do in Morne-Vert, day and night?
Morne-Vert is a small village where special events are well-marked.
During Pentecost, the Verdimornais celebrate the Montjoly festival for three days on Nelson Mandela Square.
This festival is filled with various competitions such as foot races, egg races, sack races, and more. It's a great moment of sharing and conviviality open to all.
