History of the Municipality of Ducos
Once upon a time, Ducos or Trou-au-Chat was part of the large town of “Cul-de-Sac-à-Vache” composed of Rivière-Salée, des Trois-Îlets and itself.
In 1687, following the foundation of a chapel on the territory we know today, Trou-au-Chat was erected as a parish.
But it was not until 1837 that it would become a commune.
But one problem arises: the name !
The municipal council finding it relatively pejorative decided to change it in favor of that of the Minister of the Navy and Colonies of Napoleon III, Monsieur Théodore Ducos.
The latter was not of this opinion and thus refused the nomination of the commune with his patronym.
Unfortunately, he passed away shortly afterwards, and the municipal council, with the agreement of the new replacing minister, validated the project !
On September 6th 1855, Trou-au-chat officially changed its name to Ducos.
