[DIY] From Plate to Well-being

Coconut milk, cornstarch, eggs, honey, lemon… what do you think of immediately? Sweet lovers, make yourselves known! I can already see you salivating at the idea of eating healthy pancakes. But, today we’ll be talking about indulgence, not for your taste buds, but for a part of your beauty that many neglect due to lack of time, money, or knowledge: your hair. How about making hair products from simple, economical ingredients with unsuspected virtues? Let’s do it!

I‘m in love with Coco

Down with the stereotypes about our hair! They are difficult to tame and require very little maintenance. That’s right… once you find a good hair routine, you’re set. But, that’s the hard part – finding one.

Coconut, in oil, butter, or milk form, has multiple benefits. With good fatty acids, including linoleic acid, coconut milk is a perfect ally for nourishing, strengthening, beautifying, and repairing our hair. Rich in vitamin B9 or folic acid, coconut milk stimulates the scalp’s blood circulation, promoting hair growth and resistance. Vitamins C, E, B3, and B6 protect against oxidation and aid in cellular regeneration.

How can coconut milk be effectively used in hair care ?

Coconut milk alone is already very effective. Just apply it to dry hair, strand by strand, section by section, like a dye. Then wrap your hair in a towel, plastic wrap, or a heating cap, and let its benefits work for about an hour. When rinsing, it’s best to use a natural shampoo.

This very simple treatment can be repeated weekly or monthly, depending on your needs.

Coconut milk can be combined with other natural ingredients to care for and revitalize our hair, whether it’s kinky, curly, or mixed. This is the case with bananas.

Here’s a little indulgent recipe that combines hydration and softness:

  • 1 ripe banana;
  • 3 tbsp. of coconut milk;
  • 1 tbsp. of castor oil;
  • and optionally: 1 egg yolk, 1 tbsp. of honey, 2-3 drops of ylang-ylang oil.

Maizena®, the little secret for soft and silky hair

Cornstarch, which comes from corn starch, is not just reserved for making light and fluffy cakes, or thickening the famous chocolate communion #chocolatpainaubeurrelavie. Starch is a good humectant: it attracts water molecules and helps the hair to retain them in the hair fiber. Hair will be coated, soft, shiny, and flexible.

Creating a mask with cornstarch will help hydrate, nourish, and repair hair. If your scalp secretes too much sebum, this mask will be an undeniable asset:

  • 3 tablespoons of Maizena®
  • 200ml of coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil. The ingredients should be mixed over low heat to obtain a smooth and creamy paste, which should be left to rest for a few minutes before application.

The egg, or rather something new in your routine

The alternative to classic shampoo, the egg shampoo! The yolk of the egg softens the hair and makes it shine. The white, on the other hand, regulates oily scalps. Vitamins A, D and E, biotin and folate, these nutrients are highly recommended by researchers for hair growth.

1 or 2 eggs are enough for this cleansing treatment. Beat them, massage your scalp with the mixture for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water to prevent the white from coagulating. For those who don’t like the fresh smell, you can add a few drops of lemon.

Sweetie darling, like honey syrup

Honey is also a good humectant. How to use it? As a post-shampoo mask:

  • 2 tbsp of honey;
  • 1 tsp of lemon juice;
  • 1 to 2 tbsp of warm water (to facilitate the application of the mixture). Apply the treatment strand by strand, leave it on for half an hour and rinse thoroughly.
diy soin capillaire au citron vert

Look lemon, quel citron ?

In addition to being a very effective natural cleaning agent, lemon juice, when used as a final rinse, helps to close the hair cuticles, fight against hard water, and bring out the natural shine and highlights of the hair.

Because it can also dry out the scalp in the long run, mix the juice of one lemon in 1 liter of water and remember to moisturize your wet scalp after rinsing.

As you can see, what’s in the kitchen can be used just as well for the delight of the taste buds #teamfoodporn as for the outside of the body #selfcare. The boundary between food and cosmetics was already very fine in ancient Egypt, so what are we waiting for today?

Have fun and take care of yourself; this sentence should resonate in you as a daily leitmotif.
