Accessing the Slave Canal Hike

The easiest way to access the Beauregard Canal is by arriving by car at the Fonds-Saint-Denis parking area. From there, you can ascend to the Maison Rousse lodge, an ideal spot to quench your thirst, gather strength, immerse yourself in nature, and also recuperate from your emotions on the return journey!

From the lodge, two access points are available: either a small path or a staircase. Afterward, the route is quite straightforward; simply follow the small canal. The path will lead you to Bout Bois in Le Carbet, where you can turn back. Naturally, you can also hike the trail in the opposite direction.

Beauregard Canal: Mind the Vertigo

As it's an irrigation canal in a rugged terrain area, it runs along the side of a hill. The advantage is the lack of significant elevation – only about 15 meters. However, the path is essentially the outer edge of the canal. In other words, you'll be walking between the watercourse and… the void. At some points, the ledge is only 30 to 40 cm wide, quite impressive.

Precautions for Your Hike in Martinique

Firstly, check on the La Martinique website if the hike is accessible as it can sometimes be closed for maintenance. If you suffer from vertigo, it's better to avoid this trail. Due to the risks involved, it's strongly advised not to bring young children or a stroller.

Finally, stay on the path and avoid rummaging through the vegetation as the fer-de-lance snake might be lurking nearby.
