Learn more about the Gendarme’s Leap

The place has long been used as a stop to give water to the gendarmes’ horses when they had to go to Saint-Pierre. But also as a surveillance point to capture the raiders who were rampant in, and around, the city (the raids were particularly numerous following the eruption of the nearby Mount Pelée.

The place is now an essential meeting point for all those who wish to discover a beautiful natural space.

The Gendarme Waterfall in detail

The waterfall is located on the D1 road that connects Saint-Pierre to Fonds-Saint-Pierre. It is easily accessible from the car park at the Deux-Choux crossroads. Five minutes separate you from the place accessible by very steep steps. It is also possible to access the site by canyoning.

Hikers will still be able to include the waterfall in a discovery program of the region’s jewels: Balata Garden, Jesuits Trail, Alma Gorge or Pelée Mountain for the good walkers. It is a chance to discover the lush and wild vegetation typical of the Caribbean coast.

The waterfall has a height of 10 m and offers an exceptional show. When you arrive at the edges of the waterfall, you can rest on the benches present. The water falls into a basin where it is possible to swim (if the cold water does not bother you). The tranquility of the water and the sound of the water will rock you the best. It is also possible to have a picnic in an enchanting setting where plants are kings.

One thing to know before scheduling your visit is that the place is very popular among Martiniquans and it is very busy during the weekend. If you prefer peace and quiet, prioritize a weekday.
