The Alma Gorges are located about forty kilometers north of Fort-de-France, on the mythical Trace route. After a long ascent of the Alma River, punctuated by more or less physical tests, you will discover its magnificent 40-meter-high waterfall.
The ascent of Alma River in Martinique: a rare experience
Once you arrive at the site, you'll need to venture into the rainforest and cross numerous wooden log steps to reach the bed of Alma River. From there, you can access the entrance to the gorges by walking upstream along the banks of Alma. However, before you can admire the grand waterfall, you'll need to cross six basins, small waterfalls, and traverse wet trails through dense and lush vegetation.

This hike requires about three hours of walking and effort during which you need to be cautious due to slippery rocks and sometimes challenging conditions in certain areas. However, discovering the rainforest and witnessing the grand waterfall of Alma will truly amaze you.
From the start, you'll be attentive to everything the exceptional biodiversity of the site presents to your eyes. Along the trail, you may come across a mahogany tree, a majestic tree highly sought after for its fine woodworking timber.
You'll appreciate the relative tranquility of nature, punctuated by the flow of water cascading from one basin to another or the song of the mountain whistler, one of the rare birds found in Martinique.
You probably won't resist the temptation to jump off rocks measuring three or four meters high that line the basins, or swim against the current to tame the flow, even though here, the coolness on your skin contrasts with the warm waters of the Martinique beaches.
