Nature intimacy at Fonds Nicolas Waterfalls Martinique is full of waterfalls, each one different and unique. Fonds Nicolas’ may not be the most spectacular, but with their network of three basins, they offer a magical setting of nature a half hour drive from Fort-de-France. Difficult to find, poorly indicated, and with paths not well maintained, what they provide is a true little adventure.
How to Find the Fonds Nicolas Waterfalls?
These waterfalls are located south of the Le Robert commune in Martinique, northeast of the Martinique island. They are west of the Chopotte district (in the city of Le François). To get there, take the RD1 between Le Robert and Le François in Martinique and turn onto the D29A towards Chopotte. Then, turn right at the sign indicating the direction to Le Lamentin/Robert and follow the road to the Foyer Rural de Fonds Nicolas. From there, turn left and drive for about a kilometer, relying on your observation skills to spot the sign indicating the waterfalls and the hiking trail marked with a chain.
Enjoying the Waterfalls and Pools at Fond Nicolas
The hiking trail in question will lead you to the waterfalls in just a few minutes. You'll easily find the three pools populated with fish (tilapias) and crayfish. Enjoy the constant sound of the waterfall, the flow of which depends on the weather in the preceding days. In fact, it's a bit of a dilemma here: if it has rained, the waterfalls will offer their best display, but the surroundings, if not well maintained, might be slippery. If it's dry, the path will be easier, but the waterfalls might be less impressive.
The great advantage of this complex of waterfalls and pools is the peaceful surroundings. As they are not the most popular on the island and are rather poorly marked, you might have the chance to be alone in nature.
However, do not miss the signs, as the roads in the area are very winding and steep, which might strain your vehicle.
