Anse Cafard: A Memorial for History

A few hundred meters from the beach and 2 kilometers from the town of Diamant, 15 monumental statues face the sea, commemorating the tragic shipwreck of a slave ship in 1830. Out of 300 enslaved individuals, only 86 survived, but deemed without rights, they were sent to penal colonies.

These white statues, the color of mourning in Martinique, heads inclined toward the Gulf of Guinea, presumed origin of the ship, were sculpted by Laurent Valère, a native, on the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery.

Beginners can take lessons with professionals ensuring optimal safety conditions. Everything is provided—life jackets, harnesses, neoprene shoes, and even a radio device for communication between the instructor and students.

Anse Caffard Beach: Dive into the Heart of the Ocean

For enthusiasts of diving in Martinique with tanks, the drop-off at Anse Cafard will take you to a depth of 35 meters.
