That being said, it's certain that the low season (outside of school holidays) is the least expensive time to visit the island. Ticket prices can drop by half or even more during this period.
The airport in Martinique
In Martinique, there is only one airport, the Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport located centrally in the municipality of Le Lamentin. Built in 1949, it was put into service in 1950. It was previously known as Fort-de-France / Lamentin Airport. On January 15, 2007, it was officially renamed the Aimé Césaire International Airport in honor of the famous Martinican poet and politician.
The facilities at Lamentin Airport
It has a single runway with a single terminal. The runway is 3300 meters wide and 45 meters long. It can accommodate large aircraft like Boeing as well as tourist planes.
Recently renovated to accommodate its 2 million annual travelers, it has a 2500 km2 departure lounge with a capacity for 2,500,000 passengers. It also has a paid parking lot with 1650 spaces where you can safely park your car when you head to new horizons.
Even better, you can reserve your parking spot with Parclick. Upon arrival, you'll have access to various means of transportation such as the TCSP, taxis, and numerous car rental companies like Hertz or Jumbo Car.
At the airport, there are 11 car rental counters. Therefore, remember to make a reservation before your arrival to avoid any unpleasant surprises! If you forgot to buy some souvenirs for your loved ones, no need to panic, the airport houses several souvenir shops where you'll most likely find what you're looking for!
You also have a currency exchange office at your disposal along with the headquarters of the major companies that use this runway.
Airport Services
The Aimé Césaire International Airport offers a wide range of services for passengers. It caters to the comfort needs of families by providing self-service strollers, assists individuals with reduced mobility by offering wheelchairs to facilitate their movements, includes a pharmacy, a medical center, and spaces dedicated to the care of young children.
You'll also find ATMs and a mailbox there.
Airlines Serving Martinique Airport
As its name suggests, this airport is international, serving multiple destinations from Europe to the Americas, traversing the Caribbean.
Currently, nine companies operate in this market: Air France, Air Caraïbes, Fly Corsair, Air Belgium, Air Antilles Express, Sky High, American Airlines, Air Canada, and Air Transat.
The most frequented are Air France, Air Caraïbes, and Fly Corsair, as these airlines offer the most sought-after destinations.
The Best Time to Book Your Tickets
Planning your vacation usually depends on your availability and that of your loved ones. However, to anticipate a trip to Martinique at the best price, we recommend certain dates when you can secure tickets at more affordable rates.
Nevertheless, note that there isn't necessarily a good or bad season to visit Martinique. On this tropical island, you can enjoy various advantages throughout the year.
That being said, from June to October is the cyclone season, but it's also the period for the leatherback turtle's egg-laying, which you might encounter while swimming in the sea or lounging on the beach. You can also admire and participate in the Yoles Boat Race, which takes place annually during the first week of August.
Always remember, despite the cyclone season, Martinique remains a tropical region, so you're never completely immune to unpredictable weather changes.
Airfare Cost to Martinique
The cost of tickets varies depending on when you book and when you intend to travel. Generally, tickets are cheaper in May as it's the low season with fewer visitors. However, this won't detract from the charm of your visit; quite the opposite – May is a month of commemorations for our island. Many cultural events are organized in honor of the abolition of slavery.
Conversely, during the summer holidays and at Christmas, the price of a ticket from mainland France can reach up to 1300 euros for two weeks per person in economy class.
For a cheaper price, we recommend avoiding the carnival period, year-end holidays, summer vacations, and generally school holidays.
Should you have any doubts, we encourage you to use an online simulator that can calculate the most advantageous plan for you.
To summarize:
- Opt for May and September to travel to Martinique at a lower cost.
- Upon arrival, consider a means of transportation like car rental, with companies adjacent to the airport. You can compare prices using a simulator.
- Plan in advance, as ticket prices tend to rise closer to the chosen dates.
