Habitation la Sucrerie Martinique: A Timeless Experience

Even today, some of the world's finest rums are produced on "The Isle of Flowers." Habitation la Sucrerie in Anses d'Arlet stands as one of the jewels in the crown of the island's industrial history, built on the trade of this beverage. From aged rums to Saint James, Dillon, or Neisson, you have a variety to choose from.

While you wait to indulge, take a tour of this magnificent estate acquired by Jean-François Hayot at the end of the 18th century, after leaving his coffee plantation in Saint-Esprit.

Distillery Habitation La Sucrerie: A Jewel in Anses d’Arlet

It was his son, Michel Hayot, who, from 1845, directed the family's production toward sugarcane exploitation. Juggling the roles of mayor and industrialist, he steered the enterprise towards prosperity. Thanks to his expertise, he enabled the manufacturing of bricks and terracotta tiles by acquiring Habitation Poterie and extensive properties in Trois-Îlets.

However, it was Octave Hayot who truly brought out the agricultural potential of the Rivière-Salée plain. Despite its reputation as marshy, he managed to make the most of it by cultivating sugarcane, revolutionizing its economy.

As for the Habitation itself, it quickly becomes clear that it is several buildings that have been aggregated. Walking through its 200 m2, its vegetable garden, the outbuilding, one can perfectly imagine the lifestyle of that era. The square well remains a curiosity dating back to the beginning of the First World War.

This dive into an outdated universe where imposing buildings of wood and bricks still remain is a detour that must absolutely be taken to better understand the soul of this country. Of course, tasting is also essential! The Habitation La Sucrerie was listed as a historic monument in 2016.

Visit Habitation La Sucrerie

Habitation La Sucrerie opens its doors only during the Heritage Days, held annually in September. The guided tour offers insights into the architecture and history of the estate, including the main house, outbuildings, and industrial equipment.

To access the site of Habitation La Sucrerie, follow the D7 road to the entrance of the village of Les Anses-d'Arlet: the estate is located at the intersection of D7 and D37. You'll need to park your vehicle at the entrance of the village.

A few minutes' drive away, you can visit Grande Anse and the village beach of Les Anses-d'Arlet, Cap Salomon, or embark on the Morne Larcher hike.
