You have never heard of Sinai Beach in Martinique ? It is the northernmost beach of the island, facing Dominica.
Sinai Beach Martinique: A Feeling of the Edge of the World
This beautiful black sand beach, nestled at the foot of cliffs and lined with coconut trees, is located in the municipality of Grand'Rivière. Thick and lush vegetation, crystal-clear waters: the setting is… impressive! The water is warm, making swimming very enjoyable. However, be cautious of the currents and don't venture too far from the shore.
A big plus: it's one of the few beaches in Martinique that is still very well-preserved from tourist activities. Calm and tranquility are the order of the day.
It's worth noting that the beach is not very large, so it's better to avoid going there on weekends in the middle of the afternoon and opt for early mornings or weekdays.
How to Access Sinai Beach?
One thing is for sure, you won't be bothered by the hustle and bustle of the road because it is only accessible on foot.
To reach Sinai Beach, you need to get on the A1, then take the Route de Balata (N3) exit to access the North Atlantic region of the island.
The road is very scenic but challenging: you will pass through Fond Saint-Denis, Morne Rouge, Ajoupa-Bouillon, Basse Pointe, Macouba to reach Grand'Rivière.
Once you've crossed the bridge, you've arrived in the town of Grand'Rivière. You can follow the direction of the port. A sign indicating Sinai Beach is located right next to the town hall.
The one-way road will lead you to the parking lot. Once there, a short path will take you to the beach in just three minutes.
The travel time may vary depending on your starting point, but from Fort-de-France, it takes about an hour and a half to reach Grand'Rivière (not including potential traffic).
Regarding traffic, it's no secret that it's very difficult to avoid traffic jams in and around Fort-de-France and Le Lamentin. On weekdays, try to avoid being on the road, especially in the morning between 6:30 AM and 9:30 AM, heading from the south to the north, and from the east to the north. The same applies in the late afternoon from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. You may end up wasting a lot of time in traffic.
What to Do Around Sinai Beach?
If you venture to Sinai Beach, take the time to explore the town of Grand'Rivière, located at the foot of the majestic Mount Pelée. Grand'Rivière, due to its geographical isolation, primarily relies on fishing and local businesses.
The town also attracts many hikers and nature lovers with its famous Grand'Rivière-Prêcheur hike. The hike starts at Anse Couleuvre and covers a distance of 17km. Allow about 6 hours for the one-way hike. Don't worry, a return trip by boat is possible.
Despite its length, this hike is one of the most beautiful in Martinique and allows you to cross a completely wild part of the island.
For wildlife and flora enthusiasts, this is THE hike not to be missed. Locals have even nicknamed this hike "the tarantula trail." Indeed, it is very common to spot a matoutou falaise (a type of tarantula) or a tarantula along the trail.
The ascent of Mount Pelée is another iconic hike that can be started from Grand Rivière. We'll warn you, it's not the easiest option for climbing Mount Pelée. It has more elevation gain (610m), is longer, and covers a distance of 11km. Allow about 6 hours for the round trip hike.
Make sure you are in good physical condition, wearing suitable shoes, and have water reserves and a raincoat with you!
