L’Œil Bleu in Martinique: A Paradise-like Natural Pool
L’Œil Bleu is a natural basin surrounded by rocks forming a barrier that shields it from the waves. It might easily remind you of an open-air jacuzzi simply due to its shape and the captivating color of its water.
To access this paradisiacal spot, walking is your only option. The Oeil Bleu is situated along the famous hiking trail called Trace des Capes.
To reach the natural pool, take the Cap Ferré trail, allowing around 1.5 to 2 hours for the round trip based on your fitness level. There’s no need to worry; the trail is accessible to all, featuring no significant slopes along the path.
Unlike some other hiking trails in Martinique, your heart won’t race here.
Besides being easily accessible, you'll enjoy an idyllic setting throughout the hike: on one side, stunning beaches, and on the other, the blue of the Atlantic Ocean.
If the temptation is too strong, feel free to stop whenever you like to enjoy the beaches lining the trail.
Once you arrive at the natural pool, exercise extreme caution! The beauty of this place is undeniable, but the Oeil Bleu is as magnificent as it is dangerous! Swimming here has been prohibited since 2017 due to the risk of death.
Numerous factors should not be overlooked: the wind, the currents, the tides, and the possibility of being thrown against a rock. If, despite these warnings, you decide to swim, don't do so without water shoes, as many sea urchins inhabit this natural pool.
How to Reach the Natural Pool of L’Œil Bleu
To reach the natural pool of L’Œil Bleu, follow N6 towards Le Marin. Then take D9 and D33 towards Cap Macré, where signs will guide you to the beginning of the Trace des Caps trail. You can park here and start the hike.
There's an alternate route that's slightly longer. Instead of heading towards Cap Macré, follow the direction of Cap Chevalier and Anse au Bois.
What to Do Around L’Œil Bleu?
For hiking enthusiasts, discovering the natural pool of L’Œil Bleu is the perfect opportunity to explore the trails of the famous hike, Trace des Caps. In its entirety, it covers 27 km (approximately 12 hours of walking) but can be divided into 5 sections:
- Petit Macabou to Cap Macré (5km, around 2 hours)
- Cap Macré to Cap Chevalier (7km, about 3 hours)
- Cap Chevalier to Anse Trabaud (10km, around 4 hours)
- Anse Trabaud to Les Salines (5km, approximately 2 hours)
- Les Salines to Anse Caritan (4.5km, 1.5 hours)
It would be a shame to visit L’Œil Bleu without exploring the town of Sainte-Anne, renowned for its beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Plage des Salines, Anse Caritan, Anse Michel, Anse Meunier – you'll have plenty to explore in the area.
In the town center of Sainte-Anne, don't miss the covered market or the Notre Dame de Sainte-Anne church, a classified historical monument.
