To make it easier for you, we suggest some different hiking routes around Martinique, with various starting and ending points, crossing splendid landscapes that will allow you to discover some of the most beautiful attractions of this magical Caribbean island and enjoy breathtaking views during your hike.

South Martinique Hiking: Diamant – Morne Larcher

The town of Le Diamant is renowned for its magnificent landscapes, clear turquoise waters, and white sandy beaches. A good starting point for your journey is the natural reserve of Rocher du Diamant, where you can see sea turtles and tropical fish. Next, take a walk on the hiking trail leading to the summit of Morne Larcher, an inactive volcano that dominates the region. From there, you can admire the breathtaking view of the entire island. Once you reach the bottom, head to Anse Cafard, a charming fishing village with many restaurants serving typical Creole dishes.

North Martinique Hiking: Montagne Pelée

The next day, explore Montagne Pelée, the highest peak in Martinique. This mountain range is located in the Martinique National Park, recently recognized by UNESCO. Once there, you can follow a hiking trail that winds through tropical forests and volcanic peaks (you will have several starting and duration options for your Martinique hike). In the evening, stop in Saint-Pierre, a small town located at the foot of Montagne Pelée, which was the capital of Martinique before the devastating earthquake of 1902.

Hiking around the Caravelle Peninsula

In the middle of a varied landscape, this hike allows you to discover the Natural Reserve of the Caravelle Peninsula, its indigenous fauna and flora. In just a few meters, you will go from the Atlantic coast ravaged by waves to the tranquility of the mangrove.

Indeed, the Caravelle Peninsula is unique in that it can bring together the mangrove, swelled beaches, small quiet coves, banana fields, dry forests, tropical forests, sugarcane fields, grassy savannas, and cliffs, some of the most astonishing images of Martinique in a short time. It is a blend of the tranquility of the south and the authenticity of the north.

The Caravelle Peninsula is located in the town of Trinité, on the north Atlantic coast of Martinique. To start the hike, you will need to follow the directions to Trinité and then follow the signs leading to the ruins of Château Dubuc or the natural reserve of the Caravelle Peninsula. You will have to cross the town of Tartane.

The last day of your trip should be dedicated to the Caravelle Peninsula. Located on the Atlantic coast of Martinique, this place is lined with beaches and coconut trees, offering a paradisiacal setting to enjoy the turquoise sea. You can take the time to swim, sunbathe, and walk along the beach and the coast.

Hiking at Savane des Pétrifications

Altitude and distance: Allow two hours to cover the 7.3 kilometers of the trail. There is only a 9-meter elevation gain, and the trail is mostly flat.

What is the best hike to choose in Martinique? At the extreme south of the island, near the southern tip of the Sainte-Anne peninsula, you will find Savane des Pétrifications. It is an almost desert-like arid region, crossed by the Trace des Caps trail. Before erosion completely removed the vegetation, petrified tree fossils could be found in this region, hence its name. The trail starts at Anse A Prunes and leads to Anse Trabaud. Pointe d'Enfer and its almost lunar, desert-like landscapes reveal their beauty and nuances. Be cautious; there is no shade when you venture into one cove or another.

Our Tips for Hiking in a Tropical Environment

There are many hiking trails to discover in Martinique. The choice depends on your physical abilities and fitness level. Whether you are an accomplished athlete or an occasional hiker, whether you are with a partner, alone, or with your parents and/or children, there is an adventure for you!

If you haven't had the chance to hike in a tropical climate, the trails in Martinique may surprise you with slippery roots, mud, river crossings, as well as heat and humidity, are just a few aspects to consider. To ensure that your hike does not turn into a nightmare, follow these essential tips:

• Equip yourself with proper hiking shoes (no sneakers or flip-flops).
• Never stop after 3:00 PM.
• Never hike alone.
• Always inform someone about your travel plans and return date.
• Take a backpack with 1.5 liters of water per person per half-day, a windbreaker, a snack (energy bars, candies, or others), sunscreen, a cap, a garbage bag, and your camera.
