History of the Municipality of Le Vauclin

Le Vauclin, the land of the Caribbeans

According to legend, the name of the municipality is said to have come from an individual, Mr. de Vauquelin, who lived in the area around 1720.

Le Vauclin was long the territory of the Caribbeans.

In 1712, during the colonization of these lands, the municipality was then under the jurisdiction of Le François. The settlers living there requested the creation of a separate parish, which they dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.

This parish came into existence in 1720.

Like many other municipalities on the island, the primary activity in the municipality is agriculture.

Sugar cane is grown on the plains, and coffee is cultivated in the highlands.

Among other things, fishing has always been practiced there, including seine fishing, which is still done today.

In 1833, Le Vauclin transitioned from the status of a parish to that of a municipality.

In 1880, a central factory was built there, but it closed its doors in 1961.

All Roads Lead to Le Vauclin!

It's quite easy to get to Le Vauclin in Martinique.

Several routes are possible. The main one is National Road 6, but it's also possible to take Departmental Roads 5, 18, or 32.

Between Sea and Mountains

Le Vauclin, Martinique, is home to a population of 9,256 inhabitants known as Vauclinois.

It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Le François in Martinique, to the south by Le Marin, to the west by Saint-Esprit, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.

The climate in the municipality is rather dry and hot, even though it is located in a mountainous region.

Although not well-known, Le Vauclin also has a mangrove! Furthermore, its coastline along the sea is famous for its "fonds blancs" (white sandy bottoms), with the most famous being at Pointe Faula.

A Town Loyal to Its Political Party

Freshly elected in March 2020, Georges Cléon is the new mayor of Le Vauclin.

As the former 1st deputy to Mr. Raymond Occolier, who held the position for over 24 years, he becomes the 23rd mayor of the municipality.

Not Too Little, Not Too Much

Le Vauclin has 4 elementary schools: 2 preschools and 2 primaries.

Although it doesn't have a high school, it does have a relatively large middle school and a maritime school.
