Beautiful morning from Le Prêcheur!
Le Prêcheur Today
Airlocal welcomes you to Le Prêcheur, nicknamed the commune at the end of Martinique!
This somewhat remote and peaceful commune is opening its doors and secrets to us!
History of the Municipality of Le Prêcheur
Le Prêcheur is one of the first inhabited municipalities in Martinique by the colonists in 1635.
This municipality has long been the site of numerous conflicts between the French and the English.
Those of 1666 and 1694 will leave a stronger mark due to their violence but also, and above all, the victory of the French troops.
Very few people know, but Le Prêcheur is a municipality that was severely affected during the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902.
Just over a week before the great chaos, on the night of May 7th to 8th, the municipality was hit by a mudflow filled with volcanic debris, causing the death of more than 400 people and the destruction of many homes.
Did you know?
Le Prêcheur gets its name from a submerged rock that, according to legend, had the shape of a preacher!
URBANISM
Located at the northernmost tip of the island, Le Prêcheur Martinique is part of the Cap Nord community of municipalities.
The village has only one entrance by car: Departmental Road 10. Alternatively, the more adventurous can make their way to Grand'Rivière by taking the hiking trail between the two municipalities.
Geography of this Northern Martinique Municipality
Located not far from the Mount Pelée, the municipality with 1,699 inhabitants has often had to deal with mudflows from its western flank, which have caused significant damage, especially in the town.
The perfect illustration of this damage is the town's bridge, which was destroyed and then rebuilt in 2017.
Among other things, the municipality covers an area of 29.92 km² and has a tropical and humid climate.
Its mountainous terrain offers views of its black sand coves but also of Dominica!
Finally, the municipality is surrounded by Saint-Pierre to the south, Grand'Rivière to the north, and Morne-Rouge to the southeast.
Politics
Fòs ba péyi-a!
Sometimes leaning left, sometimes right, the municipality has often had somewhat diversified political choices.
The current mayor, Alain Duton, succeeded Marcelin Nadeau, who had been in office since 2008 and was elected as a deputy in June 2022.
YOUTH
Sé yonn a lòt
The hometown of footballer Wendie Renard and singer-songwriter Loulou Boislaville, the municipality has a primary school.
To continue their education, students go to neighboring municipalities.
