HISTORY of the Municipality of BELLEFONTAINE
Bellefontaine is the youngest municipality of Martinique but also the smallest.
Created from a plot of Case-Pilote, it takes its name from the “Sieur de Bellefontaine”, who worked for the prosperity of the place.
But the fight was not easy !
The city of Case-Pilote, which was attached to its hamlet, did not intend to let it fly on its own.
It was only during a census that took place a little earlier that the authorities realized the numerical superiority of the Bellifontains compared to the Pilotins of the north.
Thus, a well-organized group, composed of important figures from this village, was set up to defend the independence of the future municipality.
Following a vote, on May 17th, 1950, Bellefontaine Martinique was then recognized as a municipality in its own right.
The main activities of the municipality are fishing, electricity production and agriculture.
