Bèl bonjou pa koté Trinité !
Trinity today
Airlocal welcomes you to Trinidad, a town on the North Atlantic coast of the island.
Known for its caravel and its lighthouse the highest in France, Trinité is also a city in development.
Nationally protected, its caravel and the biodiversity found there is the subject of a project to place the site in the nature reserve.
History of the municipality of LA TRINITE
The commune of Trinité was founded in 1658.
Originally a member of the agglomeration known as “la Capesterre” which consisted of six communes, the parish of Trinité was created when it was detached from this group.
Quickly a wooden chapel was built on the territory, and Father Boulogne was appointed as its priest.
The parish was divided into three districts whose names reflected the particularities :
- Little Brazil: where mostly Brazilian Jews resided
- The Cistern: which supplied the inhabitants with water
- Straw Street: whose houses were covered with thatch
The development of the city of Trinity has gone through two main axes: the military axis and the economic axis.
Ideally located, the city was a strategic place for the military wishing to defend Martinique from English invasions. That is when two forts are built: to the north, Fort Sainte-Catherine and to the south, the Caravelle Battery.
Later, under the orders of Governor Blénac, roads will be built to link Trinité and its districts, but also to reach Fort-de-France.
This decision will allow the city to trade with the other towns of the island.
Specializing in the production of cocoa, cotton and sugar, Trinité also traded internationally thanks to its port located in the great bay, which saw many boats pass by.
Durant plus de 200 ans, ce dernier sera connu comme un port stratégique de la côte nord atlantique.
Regarding the origin of the name of the municipality, two hypotheses are put forward: the dedication of the first priest to the Holy Trinity or the fact that originally, the municipality was formed of only three neighborhoods.

However, the deteriorating condition of the road in the village and the lack of parking spaces attract few people to the village.
However, the commune is keen to safeguard its unique fauna and flora, while enhancing them.
