The History of the Golf Course of Martinique

The Départemental Golf of Espérance, also known as the Golf of Empress Josephine, located on the island of Martinique, is situated in the town of Les Trois-Ilets, not far from the Saint-James Distillery. It boasts a 63-hectare, 18-hole course offering stunning views of the ocean, stretching over 6,100 meters. The course, which winds between water features, hills, lush vegetation, and shorelines, was designed by the world-renowned English golf architect, Robert Trent Jones.

It is known for its great difficulty, narrow fairways, and tactical challenges, yet remains accessible. The warm tropical climate of Martinique offers players pleasant playing conditions year-round, though occasional showers may occur. It is advisable to dress lightly to cope with the heat, but also to bring waterproof attire just in case.

Can You Play Golf Without a License ?

Yes, it is absolutely possible to play golf without a license, especially for beginners or those who simply want to try out the sport. Many courses, including in Martinique, such as the Golf of Espérance, offer introductory sessions that are accessible without a license. These sessions allow you to familiarize yourself with the course, basic rules, and equipment without the need for an official player status.

However, if you wish to access more prestigious courses or participate in competitions, a license may be required. A license provides benefits such as liability insurance and access to an official handicap, which is essential for playing on certain courses. Without a license, you can still enjoy open practice, training areas, and supervised sessions, which is more than sufficient to get started and progress at your own pace.
